International students looking to apply with Lakehead District School Board have the option of joining us for a full year (two semesters/10 months), half year (one semester/5 months), or a short term program experience of 3-4 months.

Students who are enrolling with the intent of graduating with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma are able to do so within one year but must provide an English proficiency test score. However, if they require significant English language development should be prepared to study for a minimum of two years and longer. International students wishing to graduate are invited to start their program in grade 9 with Lakehead Public Schools.

All students will be offered additional ESL language support, should they require assistance with classes, homework, tests, or more.

Admissions

Each program requires an online application to be completed via our TrueNorth online portal.

Prior to applying if you wish to check on school availability or for specific requests, please email the program at International@lakeheadschools.ca.

Once you are ready to move forward with an application, please go to our online application portal. We have included detailed instructions below and attached the documents that will be required with the application.

Follow these steps below,

Step 1:

Before you begin

The Lakehead District School Board will only accept complete applications using our secure online application system. Mailed, emailed, or faxed applications are no longer accepted. Incomplete or unpaid applications will not be processed.

Before you begin the online application process, please make sure you have collected all the necessary information and documents. You will need the applicant’s complete information and complete parent information, including names, birthdates, and addresses.

Required and recommended documents (see below) must be submitted as PDF or JPEG files only and less than 5MB each. If any document is larger than 5MB, it has been scanned at too high a resolution and must be rescanned at a lower resolution before beginning the application process.

The application fee is $300 CAD and is nonrefundable.

Required documents

In order to submit an application, the documents listed below are required. If you do not upload these documents into the online application system, you cannot complete the application process. If you do not submit a complete application within 30 days, the partial application will be automatically deleted.

  • A copy of the students passport page with a photo
  • Copy of students transcripts/school records for the last two years. These should be translated into English and scanned to PDF or JPEG files less than 5MB in size. You will only be able to upload one document, so please ensure all pages of the records of grades are scanned as a single document.
  • Signed copy of the Student Participation Agreement
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Up-to-date Immunization Records
Step 2:

If all documentation is in order and the application is satisfactory, you will receive a Conditional Letter of Offer and invoice through this secure portal account.

Step 3:

You will then be sent the following forms to complete and submit:

  • Homestay and Custodianship Application form
  • Consent to Release International Student Information form
  • A video conference interview may be requested to accompany English language proficiency test results
Step 4:

When these forms are completed and submitted and fees are received and approved; an Official Letter of Acceptance and receipt will be issued by Lakehead Public Schools International.

Use the Official Letter of Acceptance, invoice payment receipt and notarized custodianship form from the Homestay provider to apply for a visa/study permit with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
