What makes Lakehead Public Schools Board International Program special?
Lakehead Public Schools offer high‑quality, progressive education, including the only International Baccalaureate (IB) program in Northwestern Ontario, modern high‑tech facilities, and a friendly, safe community for international students.
How long is the program?
International students can join for:
- a full year (10 months)
- a half year (5 months)
- or a short‑term program (3–4 months)
What times do the LPSB schools open?
School start and end times vary by school. Students are placed in one of the Thunder Bay high schools (Hammarskjold, Westgate, or Superior), each of which follows standard Ontario secondary schedules. Start and end times can be found on each of the secondary schools’ websites.
What school will I attend?
International students attend one of the district’s high schools: Superior CVI, Hammarskjold High School, or Westgate CVI, depending on availability and placement.
When should I arrive?
Students should plan to arrive before the semester begins, giving enough time to settle into their homestay and attend any orientation activities.
Who will I live with in Canada?
Students live with a screened, caring homestay family, which provides meals, a private room, and inclusion in everyday family life.
What can I do in my free time?
Thunder Bay offers hiking, lakeside activities, sports, arts, and community events. Schools also provide activities, clubs, extracurriculars, and access to recreation programs.
Can I play sports at school?
Yes! Students can participate in varsity sports and extracurricular activities, including athletics, arts, clubs, and special programs. It just depends on when you will be with us and when the sport takes place.
Can I choose the courses I will take?
It depends. Students can select from a wide range of courses including IB, French Immersion, Specialist High Skills Majors, cooperative education, e‑learning, technology, arts, and university/college preparation courses. Although, the student’s school may require them to take certain courses.
Are schoolbooks and supplies provided?
Most classroom learning materials are provided, but students may need to purchase personal supplies (pens, binders, gym clothes, etc.).
Is there a minimum age for participants in your program?
Students are generally placed in Grades 9–12, so typical participants are between ages 14–18. Younger students may be considered case‑by‑case.
How do I apply for the program?
Applications are completed online through the LPSI TrueNorth portal. Required documents include transcripts, passport page, reference letter, immunization records, photos, and program agreements. For more information, please refer to the ‘Apply Now!‘ page.
How long does it take to receive approval of my application?
Processing time varies, but most applications are reviewed once all required documents are submitted. Students may email the international office for updates.
How do I obtain a study permit?
After acceptance, you must apply for a Canadian study permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You will need your Letter of Acceptance and proof of insurance.
Can I travel while participating in the program?
Yes. Students may travel with permission from LPSI and their custodian/homestay. All travel must follow school board guidelines.
Do I need medical insurance?
Yes. International students are not eligible for OHIP, so LPSI provides private insurance through StudyInsured International, which covers essential medical care during your stay.
How much does your program cost?
Costs depend on program length. Tuition, homestay, insurance, and additional fees are listed on the LPSI program and apply now pages (students can email the international office to confirm exact totals).
Do I need a custodian while I am in Canada?
Yes. Students under 18 must have a custodian in Canada as required by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). LPSI assists with arranging or providing custodian information.
How are students supported by LPSB?
LPSI provides:

How do you ensure the quality of Homestays?
Homestay families are screened, required to provide meals, a private room, and a supportive environment. They participate in LPSI’s homestay program through approved partners, ensuring safety and quality.
